The history of Turnbulls

Turnbulls started as an independent Vauxhall dealership owned by Mr George Turnbull in Plymouth, Devon. From the ashes of World War II, it grew rapidly and George saw the opportunity to expand into the vehicle radio market.

In 1956, Turnbulls first began to retail and install radios into vehicles and in June 1957, became a dealer for Radiomobile. The Radiomobile division of Turnbulls was operated from what is now the site of the Mayflower car park and then relocated to Bilbury Street in Bretonside.

In the 1970’s, George Turnbull retired and sold the business to Wincanton Motor Co. who in turn, sold it in the1980’s to Arlington, and was subsequently bought out by LEX.

In 1995, LEX decided to pull out of Plymouth. Turnbulls then manager and current owner Ian, saw this as an opportunity and bought the radio division keeping the Turnbulls name alive. In 2011, Turnbulls moved to larger premises and now operates out of New Victoria House on Weston Park Road, Plymouth. 

In 2015 Ashley joined the business with Ian and A I Campers was established as a subsidiary of Turnbulls. They had identified a gap in the market for bespoke and unique camper van conversions with the emphasis on quality and the focus on giving the customer a personal experience with the build process and unrivalled aftersales care.

Drawing on over 60 years of motor trade experience, A I Campers has fast established a reputation for camper conversions without compromise, aiming to provide our customers with a complete package that builds on the legendary Mercedes and VW strengths of quality and reliability. All of our camper vans are built to an individual specification and can be tailored to meet even the most demanding of requirements specified by the customer.

Our aim is to provide our customers with years of pleasurable ownership from professionally designed, built and finished products backed by a 2 year warranty on all conversion work
